Try to get the hummm back

See what happens when one of our own lost her hmmm...
See what happens when one of our own lost her hmmm…

Could you say “yes” to the things that scare you for an entire year?

That is what Shonda Rhimes (creator or Grey’s Anatomy, Scandal, etc.) did.  Speaking in front of people, acting, being on live TV, etc.

During a TED Talk, she opened up about how she conducted this experiment and I REALLY think this will hit home with many of you, it did me.

Work, Work, Work
Work, Work, Work

Shonda points out that she defines herself by the work that she does.  She openly calls herself a tyrant.  She talks about loving the “hummmm” she hears in her head.

What is the “hummmm”?  The “hummmm”, she explains is the result of what she hears when everything in her work life is going great.

Shonda’s daughters know that she was a hard worker.  They knew that she is the happiest when she is working.

Who am I ?

Then one day… it’s gone.

No more “hummmm”.  Nothing.

Burnout? Maybe.

Overloaded? Probably.

Going through the motions? No love for her work.

She didn’t know what to do.  Who was she? She was lost!

What happens when you lose your hmmmm?
What happens when you lose your hmmmm?

Then one day her youngest daughter asks her, as she was on the way out, “mama, do you want to play”?  She found herself getting ready to say “no” when she remembers her experiment and therefore says “yes”.

Playing…It Saved Her Family

As she starts playing with her daughters and all the little sticky fingers and the gooey kisses, she realizes that all she has to do is focus on her girls.  The work—out there, doesn’t matter.  It’s okay.  She is safe, playing.

"<yoastmark

Then it happens.  It wasn’t loud and she has to sit really still to hear it.

It was a distant and soft…it was A “hummmm”-

Not the same “hummmm” but nevertheless – A “hummmm”.

This “hummmm”, was Love, Joy, Life!

She now always says “yes” to play.  Why? It is a way to continue to hear the “hummmm”.  This “hummmm” fills her up and rejuvenates her- remember this “hummmm” is Love, Joy, Life – instead of work, work and more work.

She realizes that the work becomes easier, she was able to be creative again and she loved her work- again.

The Love, Joy and Life that she got from playing with her daughters allowed her to realize that her work didn’t define her, rather her new “hummmm” did.

Why Did We Stop Playing?

She wonders the same thing.

It is the love that we share with our family, friends, pets, etc.  It’s the joy of meeting friends for lunch and coffee on Sunday instead of spending the weekend behind the computer.  It’s the life that we build outside of our work.

It’s saying “yes” to our children when they want to play and saying “yes” when our significant other wants to go for a walk.  As a result, it’s giving yourself permission to say “yes”.

Remember, that if you say “yes” to play, you might just find and continue to hear your “hummmm”.

Now, the shopping for the food – I could take or leave, but we need the food to cook so…I remember when I was a little girl, my mother bought me a cookbook for kids (I still have it…yeah).  I remember cooking with my mother and it was a lot of fun and I have wonderful memories of this.

Super Duper Football Watching Dip Recipe

Now that it’s football season and it’s starting to get a little chilly outside (well, one can dream) it’s time to pull out the football watching, crowd pleasing dip recipes.

This is one that my family loves.  I make it at least twice a month and also on Thanksgiving so that everyone has something to munch on while watching the games.

This can be made either on the stove-top or in a crock-pot.  So, here it is…

1 block of cream cheese
1 can of Ro*tel (mild or hot depending on your family’s preference) ~This is usually found by the tomato sauce
1 package of Jimmy Dean’s sausage (I use Turkey sausage for a healthier version)

cream-cheese
Philadelphia Cream Cheese
step1
Ro*Tel and Jimmy Dean Sausage

(If you are use sausage that you have to cook, fry that up prior to adding it to the cream cheese and Ro*tel mixture.)

Place the block of cream cheese and the Ro*tel in a place and place on the stove-top on medium high.

Make sure that you break up the cream cheese before you add the sausage.

When the cream cheese and sausage is a creamy consistency, add the sausage.

step-2

Stir and allow the sausage to get hot

step-3

then serve with tortilla chip or crackers.

step-4

Easy and Delicious….

Enjoy…

Positive thinking is the mental attitude in which you expect good and favorable outcomes. Positive thinking is the mental attitude in which you expect good and favorable outcomes. So, if you think positive everything will be great, right?  Wrong.  Bad things happen to good people, but if you look hard enough you can realize that there is something good in every situation.   For instance, let’s take a look at a situation that happened to me years ago…

Family Trip

My family drove to Georgia to visit my brother and his family.  We packed the car had a great trip through a couple of states and got down to his house without any problems, so we thought.

As we were pulling into his driveway, the vehicle check engine light came on.  We had just had the car serviced before leaving home so we couldn’t understand what the problem could have been.

Now, we (my husband and me) had two choices – (1) get mad at the service person that serviced our car who obviously missed something OR (2) Be thankful that we made it to my brother’s house before the check engine light came on instead of it happening out on the highway leaving us stranded.  Did I like the fact that we had to deal with this situation while on vacation? NO.  I (we) had a choice on which path we were going to take ~ negative or positive thinking.  (I think in this case my husband had enough negative thinking for the both of us…).

Negative Vibes Not Wanted

Have you ever been around someone who always complains about their life and all of the mishaps that have happened?  All they talk about are terrible things they “think” has only happened to them.

You start to realize that their negative thought process affects a lot of different aspect of their life.

  • They look unhappy.
  • They are sickly (headaches, stomachaches, etc.).
  • They rarely have good things to say about anything or anyone.

I have people that I work with and even family members who think like this each and every day.

You have to choose to both be around them and work hard not to allow their negative thoughts rub off on you.  The other choice is to distance yourself from them.

I decided a long time ago that I would not distance myself but instead continue to bring positive thoughts to their life.  Every time my family member says something negative, I always try and come back with something positive.  That usually stops the negativity ~ at least until the next phone call ~~

You can’t choose your family, you just have to LOVE them.

Just Breathe

Woe Is Me….Whatever…

Now, do I have a perfect, 100% of the time positive thought process?

Not hardly!

Too many times I find myself sighing and thinking…

you have to be kidding me, I have to come up with another meal to cook? or

I have to wash another load of clothes?

When I feel myself getting into this pattern, I stop in my tracks and think

you should be thankful that you have food to cook, a family to cook for and a home to cook it in.

Now, I know that this is small, but that’s kind of the point – you have to start with the small stuff so that you have a solid foundation on the way that you process your thoughts.  If you have this solid foundation, you will be able to make it through anything.

I figured out the older I get the more I understand that there are things in this world that you can’t change, so focus on those things that you can change ~ mainly your thought process.

Focus on the Positive

I want to leave you with a couple of things to think about:

~The next time you catch yourself thinking something negative either about a situation or about yourself, stop and write down all of the good things currently in your life.

~Focus on what works in your life, not what doesn’t.

~Realize that you can’t change everything, but you can change your thought process

I just love this quote from Abraham Lincoln because it is so true…

“We Can Complain Because Rose Bushes Have Thorns or Rejoice Because Thorn Bushes Have Roses.”

~Abraham Lincoln

Until next time ~ positive thinking!

Clean with Essential Oils

Cleaning your home should leave you with a fresh, clean, wholesome smell, not a harsh chemical smell.  For years I cleaned with products that I have bought at the grocery store and thought that the strong smell was cleaning more.  Weird thinking I know.

When I had my daughter, I was nervous about having her (and my doggies) around all of the harsh smelling chemicals, so I would make sure that her father would take her out of the house when I was cleaning.

Now, why I wasn’t worried about my health, no clue!

Then I started realizing the residue that the chemicals could be leaving behind wasn’t good for any of us.  So I started looking into detoxing my home.  Getting rid of all the harsh cleaning supplies and air fresheners (this goes for candles – unless they are organic).  If you look on the back of the cleaning bottle/candles and you can’t pronounce some of the ingredients-throw it out.

So, I had to find some cleaning products that would be healthy for my family and that when I started to research essential oils.  Essential oils are natural aromatic compounds found in different parts of the plant.  Essential oils are powerfully fragrant.  If you take a lemon peel and squeeze it, the oil that you see are in fact essential oil.

They have been used for centuries for medical purposes as well as therapeutic.  I use essential oils for cleaning, help with cold symptoms, lotion, and to keep bugs away- just to name a few.  The use of essential oils is endless.

I really love essential oils because it is so cost effective.  Buying just a few essential oils you can take care of all your cleaning needs for a fraction of the cost.  I buy a 3-pack of essential oils and pay around $8.00.  Since it is so concentrated, it will last me 6+ months.

So, which essential oils do I use to clean my house?  Let’s take a look…

Tub-   Use a glass jar with a lid (you can get one from the dollar store) and mix baking soda (1/2 box) and lemon essential oil until you get the consistency you want.

Sinks – Use a glass jar with a lid (you can get one from the dollar store) and mix baking soda (1/2 box) and lemon/lavender essential oil until you get the consistency you want.

cleaning-bombs
Toilet Bombs

Toilet bombs –  Use 1 1/3 cup of baking soda, ½ cup of citric acid, 1 tsp of water and 30 drops of lemon (you can use lavender or peppermint).  Mix the baking soda and citric acid and essential oil in a bowl.  Use a fine misting bottle to add the water (so it won’t fizz in the bowl) until it in consistent enough that you can take some in your hand and it will keep a mold.  Using a cup cake tray or silicon mold of choice, add the mixture to the tray and pack it down tight.  Let them dry for a couple of hours.  Remove gently and place in a glass container.  Use as needed.

Counter Tops – Use a spray bottle and mix water with 20 drops of lemon essential oil.  This is an awesome smell and it helps with sanitizing your kitchen/bathroom.

Floors – I use a spray bottle (or you can use a bucket) and add water and lemon + lavender essential oils.  I works great and it smells delicious. Some people add vinegar to their water, but I don’t because it works great without it.

Air Freshener – I use a spray bottle and mix water and about 15-20 drops of lavender and use this as an air freshener, furnisher boost and linen spray.  I also use this spray on my dogs after their bath (or when they start smelling like a dog in between baths).  It is not harmful to them and it helps their skin.

Glass and Mirror – Use a spray bottle and mix water, 1 teaspoon white vinegar and lemon essential oil.  Make sure that you use a lint-free cloth.

Laundry – If you left some laundry in the wash and it has that musty smell, you can add some lemon essential oil to your load and it will take the smell right out.

Insects and rodents – I hate it when ants start appearing around my house and/or in my house (not to mention roaches and mice – YUCK!!!!).  These essential oils will keep them away and allow you to keep you home clean.

Mice – take a cotton ball and put peppermint essential oil on it and place it in your home where you think you have mice.  They will stay away and as they do not like the smell.

Ant/Roaches – if you use lemongrass or lemon essential oils, they will keep these critters away from your home.  You can even spray your counters down at night and leave it to dry and that will certainly keep these annoying creatures away.
